Anthony Miler
ART 3 is proud to present ANTHONY MILER’s first solo exhibition in New York. Miler's semi-abstract paintings and drawings, with their vibrant colors, violent brushwork, and distorted human figures are inspired by works of the COBRA avant-garde group, formed in 1948 in Paris by Karel Appel, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn, et al. Their manifesto called for complete freedom of color and form, their working method was based on spontaneity and experiment, drawing inspiration from children's drawings and primitive art forms. Anthony Miler explains his critical interest in this heritage, saying: “I like an idea of Neo-Brut, I feel like we’re reaching a moment of being ripe for this type of work again. It’s the opposite of all of these industrial production values, surface shine, and dehumanizing algorithms. It’s exciting to see the seeds of this raw kind of work coming around again, especially in the States”. Miler’s sensuous strokes remind us of Joan Miro or Willem de Kooning. He takes on their influences to create his own language expressed in stunning large canvases that clearly project his wild side. Miler’s works are spontaneous yet well balanced and beautifully executed in their expression. For his solo exhibition at ART 3, he forsakes color to explore in shades of gray with graphite on raw canvas. Hence the title of the exhibition, The Grisaille Paintings.
ANTHONY MILER, American, b. 1982 in Toledo, OH, lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He has been exhibiting in New York since he graduated in 2008 with MFA in painting from The City College of New York, CUNY. He studied at the Central College Abroad and the London Metropolitan University, London, UK, in 2004. His first solo show was held in 2008 at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA; Miler’s first New York solo exhibition opens in 2014 at ART 3 gallery, Brooklyn, NY. His works are in the collection of Francisco Costa, featured in Architectural Digest, Sept. 2014 (pp. 132-133).
